Is anyone familiar with ? I'm aware of it as an option, but haven't explored it yet. My kink education YouTube channel with thousands of subscribers just got deleted. I'd be looking for a well-established adult instance that already has subscribers, ideally.

@pandorablake I've tried to look into it for music videos, but unfortunately didn't get very far in terms of even finding an instance that suits me. There didn't seem to be many active ones... But it can't be easy to host this, given the diskspace you'd need.

@pandorablake I never tried it so far #youtube is working as i want.

@pandorablake 3rd party peertube instances tend to disappear without notice quite frequently. In my experience, I haven't had one last longer than a year. I've gone through 3 instances over the last few years before giving up. I don't mean to discredit any admins. I appreciate their time and effort. Of course, if you're able to host one yourself, it'd be live for as long as you want.
Other than that, the tech works fine.
Good luck!

@pandorablake Familiar with it as a user, but not as neither admin nor video maker. I've found it working pretty damn well, in the cases I've used it.

@pandorablake

It works well, but has the same caveats as anywhere else on the fediverse: It's distributed, and therefore, if you have an instance that isn't actively blocking bad actors, you'll have their garbage in your feed. So finding a good instance that would host the content you are looking for (kink education) may be a bit problematic - I don't know.

I do know that the android client "Newpipe" does support it. You do need to provide it a server address - I believe it defaults to framatube. However, ANY peertube instance can be put in there.

I also know it works just fine with my video client (mpv.) It likely works fine with vlc also, and probably kodi, etc.

I know 2 people who either ARE running one, or HAVE run one. I'll boost your question and perhaps they'll see it and answer from their perspectives.

Let's put it this way: I'd say you'd be MUCH better off using peertube, but it WILL mean moderation. Count that as a REQUIREMENT.

@pandorablake i've hosted a peertube instance for a while now, and from my experience, your best bet is to unfortunately self-host. most hosts tend to be concerned with the storage cost on peertube due to the size of video footage, so very few instances actually allow uploading if they even allow registration.

another thing i have to say about peertube is that it's borderline impossible to build a viewerbase on peertube alone, since barely anyone is browsing the platform itself but rather discover it through posts on mastodon/pleroma/whatever. so if you plan to roll with peertube, using mastodon as a base to build a viewerbase is essential.

that said, though, an upside with peertube is that it needs far less moderation than other fediverse services since it defaults to rejecting federation, so once you get your own peertube instance up and running, things tend to roll smoothly and you can focus on making videos instead of having to think of moderation work.

@pandorablake
I know there is a critique of the "host your own instance" reply on here, but this is the kind of use case for which it really is a relevant suggestion. But you may not have to reinvent the wheel. Here are a couple of hosting services which provide managed PeerTube instances right out of the box. You'd probably want to check in with them first and insure that they're cool with this kind of material. Both are based in the EU
